Arts and Crafts Volunteers Needed

As part of our micro-enterprise project, we would like to offer participants the opportunity to take additional skill-building workshops. These workshops will provide students with the ability to develop small enterprises from home.

The WEP is in need of volunteers skilled in the following crafts:

Knitting and crochet
Weaving
Spinning
Recycled crafts (i.e. making pop can ornaments)
Soap-making
Tie dye and batik
Rag rug construction
Sewing

Tailoring Class

Women meet at the American Evangelical Lutheran Church, three times a week, to learn tailoring skills. The instructor is also a refugee, who worked as a professional tailor, in Nepal.

Knitting Group

Knitting, crochet, and other fiber arts are known by many Bhutanese women. This group trains new crafters and provides a venue for socialization. The instructor is also a Bhutanese refugee.

LSS-SW has partnered with the Association for Supportive Child Care/Ninos en Mi Casa program, to certify refugee woman as professional child care providers.

Mentor Pairing

The Phoenix WE Program provides one-to-one mentors for select clients. Volunteers may assist with the development of life skills, English tutoring, general acculturation, or other special needs. To participate, email areeves@phxinternet.net or visit Volunteer Match.

Health education is a priority of the WE Program. Other classes include mental wellness, safety, budgeting and banking, and domestic violence awareness.

Microenterprise

Skilled women are invited to sew and craft items, for sale, as a means to supplement their family income.

Skill building

Opportunities to develop new skills are also provided.

An Iraqi client has been hired to teach other women basic computer skills

Once sewing class participants have reached an advanced level, they are invited to craft items for sale.

Because LSS-SW is a nonprofit organization, funding is limited. We do our best, with what we have, but your help makes all the difference.

Any support is appreciated. Whether it's a bolt of fabric or a bag of beads, all resources are put to good use. See our "Wish List" for needed items.

Other forms of assistance include: purchasing a handmade product, volunteering your time, or inviting the WEP to have a booth at your Phoenix event.

Currently, our greatest need is for a workshop space, at which to hold computer and/or sewing classes. Central Phoenix is the preferred location. Unfortunately, our basement is no longer available for use as training area. A free space or low rent facility, which is secure, would be ideal.
